Central line placement is a medical procedure that requires a high degree of attention from the medical practitioner to prevent contamination and the spread of infection. Among the various medical components, sterile ultrasound probe covers play a crucial role in the process. Doctors and medical practitioners use these covers during central line placement.
With the help of this probe, doctors can protect patients and preserve aseptic technique as well. Thus, the demand for sterile ultrasound probe covers in India has been increasing in the medical industry.
Why are sterile probe covers important?
Ultrasound is now the most widely used and recommended method for among medical practitioners for central line insertions. Through this process, clinicians can visualise the veins. This increases the success rates of the central line insertions and also reduces the complications associated with the process.
However, the probe used during the ultrasound can lead to contamination if not covered properly. The probe comes into close contact with the puncture site; therefore, medical practitioners prefer using sterile probe covers to prevent contamination of the skin and the entry of environmental pathogens into the bloodstream.
How to use sterile probe covers?
Prepare the cover
The first step involves preparing the materials and assembling them before inserting the probe. Medical practitioners generally gather the sterile probe cover, gel, and gloves, and clean up the ultrasound machine before fixing the probe cover.
Application of sterile gel
A small amount of sterile gel is placed inside the probe cover, and it is then fixed to the probe. This ensures effective sound transmission. Medical practitioners avoid using non-sterile gel, as this compromises safety.
Cover the probe properly
Slide the sterile probe cover over the transducer, making sure that there are no bubbles or folds. There are elastic or adhesive bands in the probe covers which is secured at the end to prevent slippage. Medical practitioners generally use the covers as directed to prevent any kind of slippage during the process.
Ensure aseptic technique
Once the probe has been covered, place it on a sterile surface to avoid contact with non-sterile equipment and to prevent contamination. If the cover is compromised or damaged due to mishandling, it will be unusable, and the medical practitioner will not be able to use it. A damaged probe cover should be replaced immediately to prevent contamination and ensure a safe process.
